After a short meeting and the distribution of the necessary protective equipment and headlamp, we set off with our own vehicle to Bódvaszilas (23 km, approx. 25 minutes).
Parking: Művészetek Magtára (Bódvaszilas, Akácos u. 30. - free parking)
GPS coordinates: N48° 32' 19.7" E20° 43' 41.4"
After a quick change of clothes, we set off for the Meteor Cave. The tour starts with a warm-up tour, as the entrance to the cave can only be reached on foot, which opens 2.7 km from the Művészetek Magtára, the difference in altitude is 270 meters.
This adventure tour is the most difficult of all, walking through the cave is considered a real extreme tour, so good fitness and climbing skills are required!
During the tour, we can reach the monumental Hall of Titans located at a depth of -100 meters by crawling, climbing, and using ladders installed in shafts. After walking around the hall, we climb back to the surface, while experiencing the difficulties of the 100-meter difference in level.
After the cave tour, we walk back to Bódvaszilas, where after changing clothes we set off with our own vehicles for the next stage of the challenge (19 km, approx. 20 minutes).
Parking: Vörös-tó Visitor Center (outskirts of Aggtelek)
GPS coordinates: N48° 28' 20.4" E20° 32' 19.4"
We put on our caving equipment again in the Vörös-tó parking lot, then descend the stairs from the Visitor Center into the main branch of the Baradla, which is 50 meters deeper. We immediately leave the illuminated and built-up cave section and soon arrive at the entrance to the largest side branch of the cave system, the Retek Branch. In the narrow corridor decorated with stalactites of the Retek Branch, we often have to wade through water, at several points the passage narrows significantly, and then we fight down a rubble hill with the help of ladders. Finally, we climb up to the most beautiful part of the side branch, the Hall of Wonders, and then descend back to the stream bed, where we see the Grand Canyon gorge and the largest stalactite formation of the side branch, the Anyósnyelv. On the way back we follow the well-known route, our cars are nearly 2.5 km away from the turning point, and the 271 steps of the infamous Vörös-tó entrance await us.
After a short rest and technical break, we continue to Jósvafő with our own vehicles, where we park in the center of the village (3 km, approx. 5 minutes).
Parking: Kúria Educational Center (Jósvafő, Táncsics u. 1.)
GPS coordinates: N48° 29' 3.7" E20° 33' 4.7"
We put on our caving equipment again and walk up to the Nagy-Tohonya-forrás, from where our last underground adventure, the Kossuth Cave tour, starts. This tour is considered difficult, so good fitness and climbing skills are required! The cave is characterized by powerful erosional formations, the path leads past stalactite columns and ridges, while in places the rumbling and murmuring of the stream can be heard. The tour leads all the way to the Reménytelen-siphon, and on the way there, ladders, step irons and tensioned wire ropes help with transportation over the ravine and the lake. We cover a total distance of 1.2 km in the cave, but due to the constant climbing and holding on, this will seem many times longer.
